Chapter 6

So far, they had stopped in a slick west end eatery and been to three bars in Soho. They had nearly gotten into a fight with a terrifyingly large drag queen over a matching handbag misunderstanding, and they had just left half a fish bowl in an edgy cocktail bar to get a taxi to the club Sapphire near Covent garden.

“Hell, I’m glad we left that last place,” Rin said looking out of the black cab’s window. Jensen laughed.

“Why is that? Weren’t you enjoying your free drink?” he asked whilst checking the time, it was 11:46 PM. Rin shot him a sarcastic look.

“When he offered a drink on the house I assumed I’d be able to pick my own! Honestly, do I look like I would order a fishbowl? I’m a refined lady!” she said and stuck her nose in the air, then cracked up.

The taxi arrived at the club and they exited; Rin gazed up at the impressive lighting then looked over at Jensen.

“Are you ok?” he asked taking his hand from his pocket to hold hers; she accepted it and stood closer to him.

“I’m suddenly feeling nervous…” she replied looking at the long queue. He smiled reassuringly down at her and began to walk to the door, guiding her past the queue.

“Don’t worry about a thing, you’re going to love this place,” he said calmly, as they swept by the waiting crowd and straight past the doormen with only a nod for entry.

“Lovely to see you again Mr. Altman! Please would you and your… guest, both follow me?” said a glamorous woman in a tiny gold dress.

Rin looked up at Jensen quizzically; he flashed her a smile and draped an arm around her shoulders. They followed the golden girl past a velvet rope guarded by an unfathomably large, bald man, to a private booth with a bottle chilling in an ice bucket. They slipped into the seat, and the girl poured them a glass each from the bottle.

“Can I get you anything Mr. Altman?” she asked leaning forward as if to present her cleavage to him. She never once looked at Rin, who appeared unimpressed.

“No I’m fine thank you, would YOU like anything beautiful?” he asked Rin. Who glanced at him then leaned forward placing her elbows on the table and laced her fingers together.

“Why yes, actually,” she said in the same voice she had used on him at the wake last week. He leaned back, enjoying the fire building in her. The girl looked at Rin with an expression of distaste.

“First of all, I would like the decency of being addressed, at the very least acknowledged, by staff.” She bit out.

“I would also like a glass of water and to see a cocktail menu. If that sounds like too much to contend with then by all means, feel free to send someone with less attitude and more capability,” she continued.

“Thank you that will be all.” Rin sat back and waited for Goldie to make her move. Visibly chastened the girl hurried away without a backward glance.
